They were made an option at some point for the US bound ones, but don't know exactly when and 181s only stayed in the US market with that model for a couple of years anyway. Given the weather sealing on a 181 (aka "Thing") there's a reason why gas heaters were standard equipment at first. So you turn off the heater.Īfter a while you'd start getting cold so you'd flip it on and heat things up, repeating this freeze/fry cycle as needed. This meant that the interior would get so hot you wouldn't be able to stay in it unless you turned off the heater. The thing worked great except for one problem, it was pretty much unregulated. The gas heater had a small draw pipe that fed through a modified gas tank sending unit (cable operated on this car) into a combustion chamber in what looked like a small jet engine in the trunk. This car had every available option you could have thrown at a one of these cars including a gas heater. I bought a 1963 40 horse Type I from the original owner in the 1976 time frame.
